As per Android Community, Instagram sees lesser toxic behavior when compared to its parent company, Facebook. However, users of the former are still subject to targeted harassment even if you are a prominent personality or an ordinary user.

As such, Instagram still proactively addresses offensive messages and comments by introducing features designed to restrain trolls.

For instance, the photo and video sharing platform has recently rolled out Limits, and Hidden Words features to a wider audience, which was previously tested to select number of users.

Instagram vs. Trolling

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, shared the goal of the platform when it introduced the Limits feature to some users, saying that it wanted to defeat hate speech completely, at least for the app that he is leading.

Nevertheless, the Instagram exec admitted that doing just that is impossible. So instead, he is leaning towards a vision of making harassment "as close to zero as possible" on the social media platform.

As of now, Instagram has introduced Limits, which allows users to lock their accounts from certain groups; Hidden Words, which filters out offensive words; and Hide More Comments, an expanded option to remove abusive comments.

Instagram Limits

Instagram started rolling out the Limits feature globally, giving its users an option to lock down their accounts temporarily away from a group of people.

The Limits feature allows Instagram users to limit not just the abusive comments, but the direct messages requests as well, for a limited time via a single toggle.

According to News18, enabling Limits can be done via the privacy settings of the Instagram app. Toggling on the feature will automatically filter out comments and DMs from strangers or people who do not follow you.

Hidden Words

Meanwhile, Instagram has been testing a feature that goes by the moniker "Hidden Features."

And as the name suggests, enabling this option will start filtering all DMs that include an offensive word or emoji, based on the community guidelines of Instagram, and such messages will be thrown away in a Hidden Folder.

The Verge noted that the message request filter can be turned on via the new section on the settings option of the app called "Hidden Words."

Hide More Comments

Lastly, Instagram also introduced an expanded version of the Hide Comments feature that further allows users to hide words that are not even included in the guidelines of the social media platform.

As such, the user now has more control over what words they may find offensive in the comments section of their content.
