As per a news story by Comicbook.com, the recent PlayStation patent suggests that a performance upgrade is coming to the next-gen gaming console, the PS5.

The news outlet noted that gaming console makers could now issue performance upgrades sans the need to release another hardware.

PS5, or other consoles like the Xbox, could receive a major boost through firmware updates, pushing new features and improvements via software.

ComicBook.com added in the same report that Sony has yet to announce another firmware update for its sought-after gaming console.

However, this time around, a new patent from the Japanese tech giant teases what Sony is currently planning to do.

Sony PS5 Patent and Ray Tracing

According to a recent report by TheGamer, the new patent filing of Sony goes to show that the firm behind the PlayStation is focusing on improving its support for ray tracing.

A user on Twitter that goes by the username "Onion00048" noticed the new PS5 patent filing of Sony this week.

The Twitter user announced that "Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a new patent."

Onion00048 further tweeted that the new filling could suggest that Sony is working to "optimize its ray-tracing effects on PS5."

The Twitter user also disclosed the person behind the recent patent filing for the Sony PS5.

The patent documents revealed that the engineer and architect for the Sony PS5, Mark Cerny, was behind the filing.

The Gamer noted that Cerny is also the creator of the PS4 launch gaming title, "Knack."

The patent filing of the PS5 architect specifically includes "System And Method For Accelerated Ray Tracing With Asynchronous Operation And Ray Transformation," and "System And Method For Accelerated Ray Tracing."

Essentially, The Gamer claims that the new ray-tracing features would help improve its performance once enabled.

PS5 Ray Tracing

It is worth noting that numerous PS5 gaming titles currently come with ray tracing, but ComicBook.com says that it often sacrifices both the resolution and the performance of the game.

However, the latest patent filing suggests that the compromise is about to end, which should improve ray tracing without having to ruin the overall performance of the game.

It is important to point out that patent filings such as this do not automatically mean that it would be part of the Sony gaming console in the near future. So, take this information with a grain of salt.
