Snap has just made things harder for some developers as it recently updated Snap Kit policies. The new update will affect how developers can easily integrate certain aspects of Snapchat into the apps they develop.

Snap's Response to the Multiple Lawsuits Filed Against the Company Regarding Bullying

According to the story by PCMag, the new update comes in response to a number of lawsuits that were filed "when multiple teenagers committed suicide" after experiencing being bullied on social media. The new changes will make it harder for developers to make use of a specific aspect of Snapchat, anonymity.

As reported by TechCrunch, Snap will no longer let Snap Kit developers make "anonymous messaging apps" compatible with the platform. The new update will require age verification restrictions on "friend-finding" applications.

Why New Changes Need to be Implemented to the Snap Kit

This new change aims to prevent the users from potentially falling into the hands of child predators for them to look for victims. Overall, the new changes aim to promote safety throughout the platform and deal with the issue detailed in the recent lawsuit that saw numerous teens take their lives.

The changes, as per PCMag, have already been added to the official Safety Guidelines of the Snap Kit itself. These include two major changes to the platform that aim to make the platform safer for its users.

First Change to the Snap Kit Platform

The first changes detail that both friend-finding and dating services won't be allowed unless the apps themselves implement strict age-gated measurements and age restrictions to users under the age of 18.

The integrations, however, will also have to run through a Review Process and will also be subject to having to give more information. There were no additional details regarding what additional info would have to be given.

Second Change to the Snap Kit Platform

Another change involves anonymous integrations. To put it plainly, apps that facilitate the use of anonymity to communicate through Snapchat, wherein the users' identities are hidden, will no longer be permitted.

Developers using the Snap Kit are given 30 days for the new policies to be implemented. The source addded that some developers, however, don't seem like they need to change.

Snap Says Only 2% Affected by Anonymity and 3% by Age Restriction

As per Snap, the rule regarding anonymous messaging apps will be affecting just 2% of Snap Kit developers, with the age restriction changes only affecting 3%. In addition, Snap gave a statement to TechCrunch noting that the company wants to help "foster an ecosystem" wherein apps would help protect the safety, privacy, and also well-being of users.

Snap also assured the public that it would evaluate its official policies, monitor the compliance of specific apps, and work alongside developers to help "protect the well-being of our community."
