The NCSC warns the public of the risks of using Russian software or services. As per the NSCS, for those using Russian software or services, it could be time for them to consider the level of risks involved.

NCSC Releases New Guidelines on Risk Assessment When It Comes to Using Russian-Controlled Products

According to the story by ZDNet, the National Cyber Security Center or NCSC has released new guidelines saying that organizations in a number of areas should really reconsider the risks that come when using Russian-controlled products due to the risks of potential cyberattacks. This warning was specially directed to those using Russian products as the main part of their own network or supply chain.

As per the NSCS, Russian law already includes certain legal obligations regarding companies assisting the FSB or Russian Federal Security Service. As noted by the publication, the pressure on these companies could even increase in a time of war.

NCSC Technical Director Issues Warning to Organizations and Companies

NCSC technical director Ian Levy wrote in his blog post about their view. It said it would only be prudent "to plan for the possibility that this could happen." Levy noted that people might stop using Russian products and services proactively.

Levy details that doing so proactively would be to wait until the users' contract expires while also stating that users can choose to do this in response to the current geopolitical event. Levy also said that users are still free to continue with the risks.

Risks of Becoming the Next Cybersecurity Attack Targets

Levy noted that whichever users would pick, the main concern is cyber security, saying that there is a balance of a lot of risks during global unrest. Levy also noted that quickly switching from the currently used product, especially if it is already being used deeply within the enterprise, could cause the damage that users are trying to prevent.

The NCSC also noted that organizations that are currently providing services to Ukraine or even individuals or organizations engaging in actions to counter Russia's state interest would also make them a target for cyber attacks. The statement warned organizations and businesses, telling them to reconsider their risk.

National Security Departments in the Government Given Advice on Not Using Products that Link to Russia

The national security departments in government were also given advice back in 2017 regarding not to use cloud-enabled products where the supply chain would include states like Russia. With the invasion of Ukraine, other companies and organizations are also being warned of the risks.

As per ZDNet, the NCSC is not able to provide custom guidance to every single business regarding how to manage their risk. They did, however, urge organizations to act cautiously due to the potential of them becoming targets of cyber aggression due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
