Biden Admin and Drone-Tracking

Essentially, the White House wants to expand the authority of both local and state authorities to track and disable threatening aircraft.

As per a news story by The Verge, the White House introduced a "Domestic Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems National Action Plan," which seeks to urge the Congress to give the authorities, such as the Department of Homeland, Department of Justice, and the Department of Defense, expanded access to drone-tracking systems.

The Biden administration plan also wants to include other agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency or CIA and the National Aeronautics Space Administration or NASA.

However, the two are only proposed to have limited access to the drone detection system.

On top of that, The Verge further noted that the White House is urging Congress to also include other law enforcement authorities for Tribal, territorial, local, and state agencies.

It is worth noting that drone detection access has never reached to levels of both local and state agencies in the past.

The White House clarified that current federal laws only authorize the Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and the Department of Justice to access drone-countering systems.

So, what the Biden administration is now asking the Congress is a big step in countering the airspace threat, expanding it even to the state and local levels.

US vs. Drones

According to a recent report by Axios, the White House also said in its action plan that the merging drone tech has brought "new risks to public safety, privacy, and homeland security."

A senior administration official from the White House told Newsweek in a statement that they are "not aware of any specific threats by any specific state or non-state actors."

However, the Biden administration is still calling out Congress for the drone detection expansion due to what is occurring across the globe.

The White House further said in the statement to the news outlet that they are also taking into account the recent reports of drone attacks in its neighboring country, Mexico.

Newsweek noted in its news story that drug cartels are now using drones to violently attack their close rivals in the lucrative business of illegal drugs.

The White House official added that "all of this is concerning and we know that the capabilities exist here."
