NASA Earth Observatory has been capturing the wonders, weirdness, and all the details of our planet since 1999. It releases images from various satellites and by astronauts in the International Space Station for the public to revel in all the glories of the Earth.

The images usually feature wildfires, pristine islands, melting ice sheets, majestic clouds, and many more. The observatory releases one image a day from its archives, but we have curated the most breathtaking shots released in May.

The vibrance of the baby blue waters in this photo is nothing but pure bliss, all thanks to the shallow reefs found on the southern coast of New Caledonia, which is a French territory found 1,300 kilometers to Australia's east.

This pristine image was taken from the ISS on September 9, 2020.

A huge dust storm tore through the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea back in April. This stunning photo was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer through NASA's Aqua satellite last Apr. 4 and was released as "Image of the Day" on the second of May. 

The Magnificent Karst Landscape of the Yucatan

Thanks to ISS's digital camera, this photo highlights the magnificent colors of the Karst Landscape. Captured on October 30, 2021, but published as the Image of the Day on May 8, this is a view of the town of Celestún in Yucatán, Mexico. 

Karst Landscape has a bedrock that is built up of rock types that can quickly dissolve with water, such as limestone.

Wildfires Blazing in New Mexico

Captured on May 10 and published on May 14 as an Image of the Day, wildfires can be seen burning in New Mexico, creating smoke plumes from the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak fire. 

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer also took the photo on the NASA Aqua satellite.

An Undersea Eruption from Manam Volcano

This gloriously gorgeous photo features a streak of green at its bottom, a plume of superheated water bursting from an undersea eruption. 

The image was taken on the south of Vangunu Island in the Solomon Islands last May 14, and three days later, it became the Image of the Day.

Intricate Texas Canyons

Texas' beautifully intricate canyons are featured in this photo which was captured by an ISS astronaut on Feb. 7, and became the Image of the Day on May 23.

The ISS at that time was flying above the Caprock Canyons State Park and the Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

There is nothing more enchanting than the swirling patterns of green coming from a deep blue ocean! 

This image was captured off the coast of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland with the help of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite coming from the NOAA-20 satellite.

The photo was taken on May 17, and was the Image of the Day on May 22.
