The leader of Microsoft's HoloLens augmented reality headset, Alex Kipman, is now out of the company. Kipman resigned after allegations of both verbal abuse and harassment, according to reports.

Microsoft Cloud Boss Says Kipman is Leaving the Company to Pursue Other Opportunities

According to Insider, Kipman didn't just lead Microsoft's HoloLens AR headset. He was also in charge of the Kinect motion controller for Xbox and is considered "one of Microsoft's top technical fellows."

Although no confirmation or denial of the report was given by Microsoft, Geek Wire was able to corroborate the situation and received an internal email from Scott Guthrie, the cloud boss of the company.

As per Guthrie, they have mutually decided that it is time for Kipman to leave the company in order to pursue other opportunities. The memo didn't mention anything about the allegations and stated that Kipman will still stay for two months in order to help the transition process.

When it comes to Kipman's experience, as per his LinkedIn profile, he has worked with Microsoft for a little over 21 years and has worked in different departments. He initially started in the Visual Studio from June 2001 until December 2005 before he started working for the Windows department from December 2005 until January 2008.

Kipman then proceeded to work with Microsoft's Xbox department from January 2008 until March 2014. After this, he was then working in the Windows and Devices department from March 2014 until May 2018, then became a Technical Fellow for Cloud and AI from 2018 until recent.

When it comes to his achievements, his LinkedIn profile notes that he is an innovator at heart and has been responsible for over 100 patents since he joined the company back in 2001. He was also considered TIME Magazine's 2011 "100 People of the Year," and in 2012, he was also named the "National Inventor of the Year" by the Property Foundation nonprofit intellectual.

Originally from Brazil, Kipman reportedly graduated in 2001 with a degree in software engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology.  As per his LinkedIn, he also ranked #19 as part of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2011 and the Outstanding Technical Leadership Award in 2021.

What Will Happen to the Mixed Reality Division

According to the story by The Verge, there were also details of the entire mixed reality division of Kipman to be reorganized. The hardware team could reportedly join the Windows + Devices org by Panos Panay.

Kipman himself has not given any comments regarding the issue and has also not yet published a tweet since May 23.
