German automotive components producer MAHLE has unveiled a "superior continuous torque" (SCT) motor that it touted as the "world's most durable electric motor."

The revolutionary new motor can continuously run at almost 90% of its maximum capacity without overheating and can even function without magnets, according to the manufacturer's press release.

Continuous Power Output

According to Interesting Engineering, peak and sustained power ratings for electric motors are frequently provided separately. This is because when they operate at top capacity for an extended period, they risk overheating and damaging componentry.

It is worth noting that thermal limitation devices are frequently found in E-motors, which lower power output whenever the first indication of overheating appears.

MAHLE has now created an even more modern E-motor that raises the bar in terms of continuous power output after introducing a brand-new magnet-free and maintenance-free E-motor in 2021.

The manufacturer said that the continuous power output of its SCT motor is over 90% peak power. It accomplishes this by using a cutting-edge oil cooling system that directs oil through a central input.

The motor then pumps the oil around the nearby stator coils using the centrifugal force produced by the rotating rotor. A radiator is used to extract the heat, and if necessary, it can also be collected for use in any parts of an electric vehicle.

A very small, light, and effective electric motor was made possible, according to MAHLE, by its cooling system. It boasts that a high-power output that ordinarily requires a much larger motor can be continually maintained by the STC motor.

As an example, MAHLE claims that its motor can conduct several sprints on race circuits or tow a large electric truck up steep mountain slopes without overheating.

A Market "Solution"

According to Martin Berger, Vice President of Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering at MAHLE, reliable yet small drives are still needed on the market to make electric vehicles suitable for everyday use.  He claimed that the new SCT E-motor will be the "solution."

Despite the fact that the SCT motor prototype MAHLE revealed employs neodymium magnets, the company claims that the innovative idea will also function well in its magnet-free motor models. This new development may help lessen the reliance on rare earth metals by the automotive industry.

The public will be introduced to the SCT motor during the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany, in September. The new SCT might significantly boost the effectiveness of electric vehicles since fewer materials will be needed to manufacture STC because of its small size.

Additionally, because of the motor's reduced weight, EV sports vehicles will be able to compete at higher speeds and with greater load and power-to-weight ratios.
