Polestar has announced new information about next-generation Polestar vehicles (EVs) of the company, saying  they will have a feature called vehicle-to-load, also known as bidirectional charging, as reported by TechCrunch.

Visitors discover a Polestar 1 car at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, southern Germany, on September 10, 2021. - Germany's revamped IAA auto show, one of the world's largest, is celebrating all things car-related, but climate concerns and pandemic woes threaten to spoil the party.

How does this work? With bidirectional charging, Polestar EVs will send energy back into the grid that will help sustain system integrity during peak usage. To put it simply, Polestar vehicles will still continue to deliver value even when parked.

This new feature will be more useful to vehicle owners who have solar panels installed on their homes. Solar panels that generate more electricity can have that excess energy sent back to a Polestar EVs' backup battery. Therefore, households can have backup power during the night or on a cloudy day.

However, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said that this new feature will be more as a community solution. During the annual Quail automotive gathering held during Monterey Car Week he said, "We have to feed into the grid and we cannot all isolate ourselves and become this kind of isolated unit. We have to work together on it."

Ingenlath sees Polestars not just on the road, but also helping powering the grid.

Automated Driving

Ingenlath also revealed that Polestar vehicles will eventually offer some type of automated driving. The Polestar 3 SUV, which will be launched soon, will come with a lidar sensor to support a hands-free driver assistance system.

The EV maker is already prepping its vehicles with multiple sensors to provide vehicle owners the comfort and convenience of automated driving, but still get the ride experience that they want.

The Future Names of Their Vehicles

Polestar also touched on their future vehicle names, and said that they will stick with their numerical sequence. In fact, Ingenlath is very much happy with how the vehicles are named.

Polestar already has two vehicles in production and announced the schedule of four additional vehicles. Their latest vehicle is the Polestar 6, an electric roadster that will be released in 2026.

Indeed, Polestar vehicles are increasingly becoming popular because of their design and performance, but with their future plans, it only goes to show that Polestar EVs will give more beyond that. The company is looking beyond aesthetics as they plan for a more aggressive rollout of their vehicles in the future.

That said, Polestar EVs will be more than just a vehicle to get around. Eventually, these vehicles will help boost renewable energy in the future that will help the world reach net-zero in the future.
