Gravity Allergy? This Woman's Rare Syndrome Prevents Her Standing; Here's How She Got It

But, to clarify things, the lady really has a real, rare syndrome called PoTS (postural tachycardia syndrome), which causes an abnormal increase in heart rate when she stands or sits up.

"I'm allergic to gravity - it sounds crazy but it's true," said Johnson via Independent UK.

She added that she couldn't even stand up for more than three minutes without fainting. The woman added that her PoTS forces her to stay in bed for around 23 hours daily.

According to Metro UK's latest report, the rare condition of Lyndsi began back in October 2015. Before she developed the syndrome, she was working as an aviation diesel mechanic for the U.S. Navy.

Because of her illness, the American naval defense department decided to discharge her from her duty in 2018. At first, doctors were not able to identify the cause of her chronic pain.

Six months after she retired from being a U.S. Navy employee, health experts discovered that she was suffering from severe abdominal pain, causing her to vomit.

The woman had to stop driving since she was having difficulties whenever she bent over. For the past few years, she has been hospitalized because she was fainting 10 times a day due to her condition.

Some doctors even speculated that her anxiety was the reason behind her symptoms. But, in February, Lyndsi was able to get a tilt test, which officially diagnosed her with PoTS.

As of writing, the woman is using the so-called beta blockers. Thanks to these medicines, Johnson is only fainting three times a day when standing or sitting up.

Can You Get PoTS?

The National Health Service explained that the PoTS is usually found in women between 15 and 50 years old. Some individuals have mild symptoms while others experience severe condition effects.

For the past few years, medical experts still can't find what specifically causes this rare health complication. But, they confirmed that the problem always starts in the nervous system of the patient.

Once an individual develops PoTS, they will experience the following symptoms:

  • Shaking and sweating
  • Poor sleep
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Weakness and fatigue (tiredness)
  • Headaches
