According to a report by the Financial Times, Ukrainian hackers revealed that they were able to pinpoint a Russian base in Melitopol, which was previously unknown to its military intelligence. A former cybersecurity expert, Nikita Knysh, led the group in using this new tactic against the Russian soldiers who were eager to talk to attractive women via instant messaging apps and social media.

One of the apps that the group used is Telegram, using the platform as a way to contact these Russian soldiers in the said military base.

The group posed as attractive women who wanted to know about the soldier's exploits and contributions to the war, something which the Russian military unknowingly sent information regarding their location through images.

According to Interesting Engineering, the hackers did not reveal their role in the attack against the base, but their actions were a massive help in gaining an upper hand against the Russians.

Russian Military Base Destroyed Due to Tactic

The Russian military base in Melitopol was secluded and remote, something which the Ukrainian military have no information about, and would have taken them a long time before figuring it out. It only shows how the power of social media may be used in these situations and focus on using it for the good, now a way for the military to learn enemy locations and such.

Dating Apps and the Dangers it Brings

Ever got catfished or honey-trapped online by someone posing to be other people but are those with ulterior motives or waiting for a chance to get monetary privileges with the act? Dating apps in the modern world present significant dangers for all, with research claiming that more crimes are linked to their use as they got famous with the app's presence.

While others prey on victims by lurking on these dating applications and posing as other people by using their images and information, others have different deceptive methods to steal data or private information. Other threat actors focus on inserting malware via dating and instant messaging apps, something that people would most likely click on their use of the platform.

It only means that everyone using it should be extra vigilant especially as they expose themselves online, despite getting consent for distributing their profiles to many users available.

In the case of the Ukrainian hackers that use it against Russian soldiers, it is something for a national cause, a feat that helped the country gain the upper hand against the other in this present environment. While this is not a conventional war tactic known to the world, it still presented an effective way to learn their location, particularly for their military base.
