A scary, recurring image known as Loab has reportedly been discovered by an AI art aficionado. According to the internet, she is now the first AI art cryptid.

Supercomposite, a user on Twitter, claims to have inspired the development of Loab, an AI-generated woman who "haunts every image that she touches" and was created in April, according to a report by IGN.

The Origins of Loab

Supercomposite reportedly asked the AI to make a picture that was the reverse of Marlon Brando, which is how Loab's purported roots came to be. To accomplish this, they entered what is referred to as a negatively weighted prompt, which prompts the system to produce the exact opposite of what it first thought was its subject.

In this instance, they responded to the prompt "Brando::-1" and unintentionally came up with an odd logo that had a skyline and the letters "DIGITA PNTICS."

Supercomposite's curiosity overcame him, and he passed the letters back to the AI as another negative prompt in the hopes that it would display a picture of Marlon Brando.

The initial pictures of Loab came up after Supercomposite typed those letters.

What emerged was a picture of a disfigured person, Supercomposite said that things just became stranger from that point on. They took the decision to merge one of Loab's photographs with a friend's creation of an angel-filled glass tunnel and the results were terrifying.

The Startling Persistence of Loab

According to Supercomposite, Loab is very persistent. In the Twitter thread, they describe that nearly every request that followed that featured Loab depicted her as a prominent, recognizable figure at the center of the unsettling and frequently graphic scenarios she appeared in.

The program was able to 'latch onto the idea of Loab' that made her persistently present in the following generations of images. She reappeared in the photos even though disappeared for a while.

The internet has followed suit, calling Loab everything from a hero to a demon, and even producing fan art of the creepy AI art. But as a result of her persistence and general creepiness, one person dubbed her "the first cryptid of the latent space", which is the space between the input and output in machine learning, as per IGN.

Although Supercomposite and their friends have provided chat logs that appear to hint at Loab being discussed privately way back in April this year, there is still controversy over whether this is a genuine glitch of AI art software or a deceptively veiled creepypasta.

But even though Loab's real origins remain shrouded in uncertainty, she is taking over Twitter and sparking conversation on issues like machine learning biases and the legitimacy of AI art.
