Gamers enthralled with the universe created by Bungie for its massively popular first-person shooter Destiny have been trying to figure out where the Tower hub, the last city on Earth in the video game, is located.

Some users on the online forum Reddit thought that the Tower, the last city on the planet after it survived destruction from the Darkness, was located in Canada's Baffin Island. However, their guess was proven to be a wrong one.

Redditor dwntwn_dine_ent_dist used the fact that there are always shadows visible in the Tower, which has a massive floating corpse of a celestial, moon-sized deity hovering above it. Observations revealed that there is no point in time when neither the sun nor the moon is casting shadows, with the complete cycle lasting for a couple of hours.

Dwntwn explained that he is a sundial enthusiast and once a user of the sextant, which is an instrument that is used for the measurement of angles between two visible objects and primarily used to figure out the angle between celestial objects and the horizon.

Dwntwn was able to establish a table that shows the time for the sunrise and sunset as observed by the city, leading to the deduction that the location of the Tower is most probably near the Earth's equator, that the date is an equinox of either spring or autumn, or both.

By looking at the Earth from the moon, the boundary of day and night can be seen passing through the South Pole, confirming that it is an equinox on the planet.

Dwntwn also noted that the shadows cast by the sun on flat ground through objects in the Tower are moving counterclockwise, meaning that the Tower would be located in the Earth's southern hemisphere.

Dwntwn further explained that during an equinox, the latitude of the observer is 90 degrees minus the sun's altitude during noon. Observing the shadow of a tall object at noon, the latitude is shown to be around 29 degrees.

Dwntwn then reveals that there are only three locations where land can be found at 29 degrees in the southern hemisphere. The first one is the region occupied by Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, the second one is the region occupied by South Africa and Lesotho, and the third one is the region occupied by Australia.

Because there are mountains surrounding the Tower, dwntwn ruled out the second and third options, along with Uruguay and Brazil. This means that the Tower must be located in the Andes, with the latitude placing the Tower between La Serena in Chile and La Rioja in Argentina.

Lastly, as sights from the Tower show that the highest mountains are located to the east, the Tower should be located at the west side of the Andes, which is Chile.

Of course, there is always the possibility that perhaps Destiny's developers didn't put this much thought in the location of the Tower.
