The Artemis I unmanned lunar rocket sits on its launch pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on September 6, 2022. - NASA on Saturday scrapped a second attempt to get its new 30-story rocket off the ground and send its uncrewed test capsule toward the Moon after engineers detected a fuel leak.

The Purpose of the Test

The demo test will help engineers confirm the hydrogen leak repair that was seen during the early Artemis I launch attempt. Additionally, the demo test will provide the teams to assess propellant loading procedures and perform additional evaluations.

Where to Watch

You can catch the live coverage of the demo test on NASA Television, the NASA app, and via the NASA website. However, the Artemis 1 demo test will air only on the Media Channel during the launch coverage, rendezvous, docking, and hatch opening of the Soyuz MS-22 carrying NASA Astronaut Frank Rubio to the International Space Station (ISS). But all other times, the cryogenic demo test will air on both the Public and Media channels.

The agency also held a media teleconference to preview the test at 11:30 am, September 19, 2022.

Artemis I Mission

Next, the Artemis I will launch in Fall 2022, which is designed to put the ship onto a 100-day expedited test flight to the moon.

Therefore, after the demo test, the second portion of the Artemis I mission is scheduled for March 2023. In the second phase, the tanker will ignite its upper stage and fly to the moon. The stage will then deliver a payload that contains a small lander and small rover to the lunar surface. In addition, the stage will then return to Earth. The landing site will be near the Apollo 17 site where we launched the last crewed lunar mission back in 1972. The landing is planned for December 2022.

Artemis I mission will serve as a test flight to the moon to gain that critical knowledge NASA will need to carry out the Artemis II mission in 2024.

The Artemis II mission is planned to deliver a crewed lunar lander and a crew of four astronauts during the next five-day trip to the moon. The Artemis II mission is expected to conduct a series of lunar surface missions, including the delivery of a small lunar rover to the surface.

From its new home on the lunar surface, the astronauts will live and work for about 30 days. The mission will be designed to test the Orion capsule and its service module in a deep space environment.

The Artemis III mission is designed to conduct the first crewed lunar surface stay of six months. This long-duration mission also will be the first one to utilize the Artemis lunar lander lunar module.
