"Overwatch 2" is dropping by next week, October 4, and there is a new policy from Blizzard which will take into effect once it publicly releases to all, requiring a phone number to set up one's account. It is a part of Blizzard's account verification procedure to ensure that people would avoid being disruptive or spamming the game, as well as using cheating tactics to get ahead. 

'Overwatch 2' Requires Phone Numbers for Accounts

Blizzard announced via its blog post that it already set up its "Defense Matrix" initiative which aims to deliver on security and protect its gamers from many problems or threats in the future. But part of this is by ensuring that its gamers are verified and legitimate in the persons they are registering by requiring phone numbers during account set up.

The public that would soon create accounts would need to verify their phone numbers through Blizzard's system, and it may work like an OTP (one-time password) where a code will be given to register their accounts. It is a part of Blizzard's focus to ensure that playing the new "Overwatch 2" will give gamers a chance of a good experience for its soon drop.

Blizzard is Cracking Down on Cheaters, Spam

According to CNET's report, this account verification is also Blizzard's way to avoid cheaters and spam players from going around the game and causing disruptive behavior during gameplay. There have been several reports of previous disruptive behavior in the last game, and the developers aim to remove those with the Defense Matrix initiative for all. 

'Overwatch 2' and its Upcoming Drop

Activision Blizzard is serving the world with the latest experience of "Overwatch" coming next week, and it is what the company already planned with its famed arena MOBA shooter franchise. "Overwatch 2" will replace the original game come October, and there would be no way to access the first title in the coming days.

The game will focus on a free-to-play experience for all and it is similar to many battle royale and online games available in the world now, something which is significantly different from the previous version. 

The company and its developers revealed the release date long ago, confirming the title for October 4, which is only several days away from now, to see the public release version of the new experience. It will move away from the beta version several days ahead of the experience, before its downtime to launch the upcoming title. 

However, there are certain requirements from Blizzard now to enjoy what the game offers, particularly the phone number requirements for users. Additionally, it aims to prevent cheaters and spam players in future experiences for all, something which it aims to set up with its so-called "Defense Matrix" initiative.
