The Russian hackers are notorious cybercriminals capable of waging an all-out phishing campaign on their targets. Throughout the years, the most dangerous groups came from this country, and organizations often struggled to prevent them from destroying online networks and systems.

However, it's not always rainbows and butterflies for them since Ukraine has proven that an effective cyber defense is the key to stopping their persistent attacks.

According to the cybersecurity chief of the UK, this is proof that Russia's malicious cyber campaign won't always work, especially if a country is properly deployed with strong security measures.

The Russian hackers have lack of success in fully dismantling Ukraine's online infrastructure and government websites.

Based on a report by ZDNet on Thursday, Sept. 29, NCSC (National Cyber Security Center) CEO Lindy Cameron said that Russians often fail to make an impact on their victims.

Cameron acknowledged Ukraine's impressive cyber defense when it comes to blocking Russia's malicious campaigns.

"But if the Ukrainian cyber defense teaches us a wider lesson - for military theory and beyond - it is that, in cybersecurity, the defender has significant agency. In many ways you can choose how vulnerable you can be to attacks," the UK cybersecurity chief added.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the latter has been bombarded by continuous cyberattacks. In the same month, the country was reportedly fighting cyber crimes like in the case of DDoS attackers infiltrating government websites.

Even the most vicious Wiper malware deployment is attributed to Russian hackers. This campaign is focused on infecting the systems until they become inaccessible to the organizations.

Russia has always had the desire to overtake Ukraine ever since. Back in 2015, the hackers launched successive attacks on the neighboring nation. The incidents reportedly caused mass power outages across Ukraine.

Ukraine Proves Strong Cyberdefense Works

For Cameron, Ukraine is commendable because of its unwavering efforts to stop Russian cyberattacks at all costs. The lack of success of the hacking attempts was evidently seen as a result.

Cameron mentioned that an effective and strong cyber defense could go a long way even against the most formidable hackers from the Russian Federations.

She hopes that global organizations will learn a lesson from this incident, especially when it comes to data protection.

Whether it's a form of ransomware attack, a state-sponsored scheme, or any other cybercrime, it's always important for a company to pay attention to these cases and how to address them effectively.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian hackers detected Russian bases by honey-trapping the Russian soldiers, per Tech Times.

The term "honey-trapping" refers to romantic relationships for political, monetary, or interpersonal purposes. The Ukrainian hackers managed to worm their way towards the exact location of their enemies by posing as attractive women online.

In other news by Silicon Angle, Mandiant, the cybersecurity subsidiary of Google, discovered that Russia's military intelligence agency has ties with CyberArmyofRussia_Reborn, Infoccentr, and XakNet Team. These three groups are infamous hacktivist squads that fully express their support for Russia.
