Apple placed a 10-minute limit on the amount of time a user can receive files through the AirDrop wireless file-sharing function from their non-contacts or "everyone." This is after it was discovered that the protestors were using the feature to distribute photographs to other iPhone users, as reported by Bloomberg.

This upgrade came from the iOS 16.1.1 published on Wednesday, Nov. 9. According to Engadget, the update was only for China as it was not included in the new iOS version made available in other areas.

New AirDrop Policy

When the 10-minute time limit is over, the system reverts to the mode in which files may only be received from the contact list. This implies that users will not be able to receive an AirDrop transfer from an unknown sender unless they have actively turned this feature back on within the last few minutes.

It makes it more difficult for anybody who wants to disseminate material and reach people in a sneaky way.

Why in China?

Apple's decision to change the policy of AirDrop in China was made after it was discovered that demonstrators in the nation had used the service to distribute posters denouncing Xi Jinping and the Chinese government. Users are less likely to get messages from random protestors if the "everyone" option is restricted.

The practice of using AirDrop as a means of evading China's strict web censorship has been well-documented over the previous three years. And now, it was brought to light once again.

Bloomberg reported that Apple did not comment on why the change was only implemented in China. However, it did say that it has plans to implement the new AirDrop policy internationally within the next year.

Apparently, the goal is to reduce the amount of unauthorized file sharing.

Apple in China

It is not the first time Apple has implemented a feature or a new policy that is only available in one area, according to Engadget.

Having said that, the IT giant has been accused in the past of complying with restrictions aimed at curbing opposition in China and of enacting reforms that would guarantee it remains in the good graces of the Chinese government.

Reportedly, Apple was once accused of cooperating with Chinese authorities by turning over control of several of its data centers located in the nation.

More recently, it has been claimed that the firm has instructed its Taiwanese suppliers to remove all "Made in Taiwan" marks from any components that are destined for mainland China. Instead, the products need to be marked down as "Chinese Taipei" or "Taiwan, China" as their source.

About AirDrop

Before this modification, users had the option to continue receiving AirDrops from other people endlessly.

AirDrop makes it possible for Apple devices to quickly share media content like photos, documents, and video files with one another. Users have the option of downloading files from people, whether in their contacts or not.
