The National Institute of Health (NIH) stated that it is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States.

Health experts explained that an abnormal build-up of proteins around brain cells causes this medical disease.

But, a new study revealed another reason why Alzheimer's disease occurs. Here's why the research's findings are a big deal.

Alzheimer's Disease is an Infection?

According to Science Alert's latest report, an alarming hypothesis about Alzheimer's disease being an infection has been backed by numerous studies for the past years.

Research published in 2019 claimed that there's bacteria could be among the medical condition's most definitive leads.

In the study titled "Porphyromonas gingivalis in Alzheimer's disease brains: Evidence for disease causation and treatment with small-molecule inhibitors," involved health researchers claim that the Porphyromonas gingivalis were found in patients' brains with Alzheimer's.

If this is true, then chronic periodontitis, more known as "gum disease," might be among the main causes of Alzheimer's.

This doesn't mean that Alzheimer's disease is contagious. Remember, gum disease is also a non-contagious infection.

New Strong Evidence Acquired

Stephen Dominy, the study's first author, said that various studies have implied that infectious agents are connected to the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

There was no proof that was strong enough to prove this claim.

After Dominy and his colleagues completed their research, he claimed that they finally had solid evidence.

"Now, for the first time, we have solid evidence connecting the intracellular, Gram-negative pathogen, P. gingivalis, and Alzheimer's pathogenesis," said the study's author.
