The ongoing Twitter fiasco under Elon Musk's leadership has prompted its users to find alternative platforms such as the microblogging platform Mastodon. However, another app is gaining traction.

Hive, an alternative to Twitter, has seen an increase in sign-ups amid uncertainties and concerns that the blue bird app will be shutting down due to the diaspora of many of its workers. Hive now ranks in the top 20 on the U.S. App Store.

Hive on the Rise

As reported first by TechCrunch, Hive had been growing in popularity since Musk acquired Twitter. Nearly 214,000 of Hive's 733,000 lifetime installs across iOS and Android, according to data from app intelligence company Sensor Tower, have occurred in the last 30 days alone.

Notably, Hive appears to have caught the interest of people outside the U.S.; according to Sensor Tower, non-U.S. installs make up about 86% of Hive's total downloads.

Data.ai expects 720,000+ lifetime installs as of Nov. 20, which is roughly in line with Sensor Tower's predictions, but it anticipates a higher amount coming from the U.S., at 370,000.

Over the course of the weekend and beginning on Friday, the app experienced another spike in new sign-ups.

Hive acquired more than 144,000 new installs over the last few days, according to Sensor Tower data, from Nov. 18- Nov. 20, 2022. It claims that 22,000 of the installations came from the US alone.

The iPhone app also increased its ranking during this time, moving from 338 to 17 in the US App Store's total rankings. It ranks No. 17 in the UK and No. 24 in Canada, according to TechCrunch.

According to Sensor Tower, the app was also ranked No. 3 in the US Social Networking category as of writing.

What's the Hype around Hive?

Hive was started in 2019 by Kassandra Pop, who was 22 at the time. The Gen Z-centric social app was described as a hotpot of several social networks, such as Twitter, Instagram, and MySpace. The platform lets users add music to their profiles.

Additionally, unlike Twitter, the app is not entirely dependent on timelines. Users of Hive can explore their interests in a variety of topic-based groups, besides their main feed.

Similar to other social networks, this app allows users to like, comment, and repost content. Users may also click on hashtags to delve further into their preferred topics.

In addition, Hive follows the same follower-based approach as Twitter rather than a network like Facebook's mutual friending framework.

It is also worth noting that Hive does not use ads to monetize and ignores personalization algorithms for a more chronological feed, as per TechCrunch.

Hive gives users the option to pay to gain extra spaces on their profile that allows them to display more of their favorite songs. According to the platform's App Store listing, these start at $0.99 for a second space and go up to $1.99 for a third or fourth.
