The Apple manufacturing partner has now offered workers a 10,000 yuan settlement to end the protests at the facility. According to CNN, the payout is equivalent to one or two months of wages that came after the protests earlier this week due to withheld pay and the strict COVID lockdown that resulted in compromised working conditions.

The Offer

Foxconn's human resources department sent a text message to employees to return to their dormitories, along with the promise to honor pay agreements. They offered 8,000 yuan to workers who agreed to quit their positions at the factory and another 2,000 yuan after they depart the area.

It is known that in October of this year, Zhengzhou was forced to lock down due to the COVID outbreak at the factory to adhere to China's zero-COVID policy. When the workers started leaving the facility, the company launched a recruitment drive that saw over 10,000 people signing up.

A document outlined salary packages in which new hires were promised a 3,000 yuan subsidy if they accomplished 30 days on the job. Then, they will get another 3,000 yuan bonus to be paid after 60 days.

Unfortunately, the workers were informed that the bonuses would be delayed until next year, in which the first subsidy payment will be released on March 15th, while the second bonus will be in May.

What Foxconn Has to Say

The company admitted that the changes to the dates were a miscommunication. They also said that they are already looking into the issue, and they have found a technical error, as reported by Reuters.

In addition, Apple, the biggest customer of Foxconn, is also working closely with them to ensure that the workers' employees are addressed.

Violent Protests

Aside from the delay in payments, there are other reasons workers are protesting. Some protest due to the limited food and supplies that they receive in their dormitories as well.

There were also reports that there were injuries after beating by the police. In addition, some workers also said that the company barely did anything to improve the situation in the facility, despite the protests.

Foxconn is the biggest supplier of Apple's goods in China, with a massive workforce of over 1.2 million employees at its facilities producing goods for several firms. There have been several reports of poor working conditions in Foxconn's factories. The company's Zhengzhou factory is where the bulk of Apple's iPhones are assembled.
