A report from TechCrunch states that the US government will be banning telecommunications and video surveillance equipment from certain Chinese brands. This is a move to protect the country's communications network.

TOPSHOT - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken (2nd R), joined by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan (R), speaks while facing Yang Jiechi (2nd L), director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Office, and Wang Yi (L), China's Foreign Minister at the opening session of US-China talks at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska on March 18, 2021.

Just last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted unanimously to expand the ban on the sale and import of Chinese technology from companies considered a risk to US national security.

New Restrictions

With the decision, there will be additional restrictions on companies such as Huawei, ZTE, and more. This means they will not be allowed to export new products into the country unless they can guarantee that the devices will not be used for public safety, security, and other national security purposes.

US intelligence agencies believe these Chinese firms could be forced to provide information to Beijing's security services. Moreover, US lawmakers criticized the authorities in Beijing for the wide use of Chinese technology to commit human rights abuses within its borders.

A Continuous Crackdown on Chinese Tech Giants

The US government continues crackdown on Chinese tech giants to protect information, especially in the past few years, as they continue to grow their businesses.

The new restrictions come as the US government continues to crack down on Beijing. Also, many in the United States are concerned about the extent to which China has dominated the country's economy.

In 2019, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to ban Huawei and ZTE from doing business with US companies. This ban prevented the US companies from buying tech products and services from the two Chinese firms.

It's not yet clear how the Chinese government will respond to the new restrictions. However, the Chinese government has long denied that the country's tech giants are involved in espionage.

The two countries have been engaged in several trade disputes, one of which is going on at this very moment. Given the tense relationship between the two countries, there is a lot of negativity surrounding Chinese tech firms. However, these companies have voiced their displeasure with the new restrictions.

This is not just a big concern to US citizens but to the Chinese as well. Many businesses in the US have relied on Chinese technology and products, especially over the last few years.

This decision is likely to have a ripple effect among the US companies that have been using Chinese technology and products. Many of these companies will be forced to either find new partners or build their own products, which can cost a lot of money and time.
