Google is removing the Duplex on the Web Service following the company's note on the Search Console Help page. The technology has been useful to Google Assistance since it allows Android users to purchase movie tickets online.

Aside from that, it even gave the digital assistant the capability to visit various websites by itself. Indeed, this has been a go-to tool for those who want to make reservations since it easily stores the personal information of a person from a Google account.

The search engine giant will now "fully" focus on improving its AI for the Duplex voice technology.

As confirmed by Google via TechCrunch, the Assistant-based technology is coming to an end soon. By the end of this year, Duplex on the Web will no longer be accessible to users.

As we continue to improve the Duplex experience, we're responding to the feedback we've heard from users and developers about how to make it even better [...]By the end of the year, we'll turn down Duplex on the Web and fully focus on making AI advancements to the Duplex voice technology that helps people most every day," Google told TechCrunch.

Besides its capability to help moviegoers, Duplex on the Web also helps users to safeguard their accounts by automatically changing their passwords when an unexpected data breach occurs.

Additionally, this technology allows them to search for good discounts among e-commerce stores. It can also be helpful in making reservations for air-based flights.

The built-in password leak detector, which was launched in 2019, was created for Google Assistant users. It's a handy feature for Autofill technology. What's more, there's no need for Google to use a trained AI model to make that happen.

The Possible Reason Behind the Shutdown

According to a story written by Engadget, the potential reason why Duplex on the Web service is shutting down is because of Google's perspective about the training cost of an AI for website parsing.

As the search engine giant highlights on its support page, the service makes use of a "special user agent," which works as a crawler for hours.

The company considers this as "resource-intensive," which means that it can get easily blocked by the site owners. If this pushes through, indexing the content will be hampered as a result.

Another possible reason why Google chose to sunset the service is the changes in Google Assistant. The Information noted in its report that the tech titan is sidestepping investing in devices that the company did not originally create.

This means that Google sees its own work as profitable, only to find out that it needs to invest more in improving its Google Assistant throughout the years.

With that being said, the other companies need to step up their "hardware playbook" once Google decides to get rid of the support for their devices.
