Trucks drive on a Highway during a snowfall, near town of Unec, Slovenia, on January 23, 2023. - Heavy snowfall and strong bora winds hindered traffic and caused power outages across Slovenia.

Currently, six public charging locations for electric trucks are online and strategically placed along a 600-km stretch of the Rhine-Alpine corridor across Germany.

The road where the charging corridor is located is one of the busiest road freight routes in Europe.

The Charging Location

Every charging location is equipped with ultra-fast 300 kW charging stations that can charge an electric truck up to 200 km in only around 45 minutes.

The charging stations can charge over 20 electric trucks per charger each day.

The new chargers have been installed at Aral retail sites in Germany, which is BO's German retail brand. They are located between the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area, northwest of Stuttgart, and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, east of the Dutch border.

The retail sites have restrooms, hot food, and showers for drivers to use during their rest periods.

In the next months, two more EV charging locations will open at Aral retail sites to complete the new charging corridor.

And by 2030, around 270,000 battery electric medium and heavy-duty vehicles will be operational in Europe, which will need up to 140,000 public and destination electric charging points.

Decarbonizing Truck Transportation

BP Pulse is moving towards helping the world decarbonize truck transportation. By electrifying the Rhine-Alpine corridor, the company allows EV truck charging beyond "back to base," while also learning customer insights that will be useful for their goals.

The ultra-fasting charging placed in the right locations is crucial to boost the electrification transition. This will result in economic and environmental benefits of low-carbon commercial road freight and transport.

The German truck fleet is now over 3.5 million vehicles. Besides developing new electric charging sites, the company also plans to create a network of mobility hubs along key logistics corridors in Europe. In turn, this will provide freight operators with a range of energy options, such as traditional fuels to support fleet customers at every stage of the decarbonization journey.

The EU is also working on new rules that will require all new trucks to be zero-emission by 2040. This has triggered a race across the industry to develop zero-emission models that use batteries or hydrogen fuel cells.

The launch was also welcomed by Johannes Pallasch of Germany's National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, "To reduce CO2 emissions in road freight transport significantly, e-trucks will play a central role in regional and long-distance transport. With today's opening, Aral is taking an important step in this direction," he said
