A veteran walks amongst the gravesites in Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day, November 11, 2021 in Arlington, Virginia. During Veteran's Day military personnel, veterans and members of the public visited the cemetery to pay their respects.

These innovations are expected to help Native American veterans by providing mental health counseling that is appropriate to their cultures.

Although suicide cases in U.S. vets declined in the past years, around 17 military veterans still take their lives every day. Because of this, the VA decided to launch its Mission Day Break in 2022.

Mission Daybreak Winners

American veterans really need help as many of them are experiencing suicidal thoughts.

This is why the new Black Box Project and Project Hozho were created. To give you more idea, here's how each of these new technology works:

Project Hozho

This technology is considered to be the first mental health and comprehensive plan for Alaska Native and American Indian veterans.

It works by providing healing practices, such as talking-circle interventions and storytelling. It can also improve veterans' access to VA sources.

Black Box Project

The Black Box Project is a technology solution that can develop machine learning models. This innovation analyzes data from digital services of veterans who died by suicide.

After analysis, the Black Box Project will create machine learning models that can identify risk patterns of suicide intentions that are not known before.

Aside from these two suicide prevention techs, other innovations also won in second-place and third place. You can visit VA's official press release to learn more about them.
