TikTok is well-known for its interesting and enjoyable filters, but this most recent one has caused quite a stir among its users. The TEENAGE-FACE filter allows users to transform their faces into a more youthful appearance.

While some view this as a fun way to reminisce about their teenage years, others are concerned about the implications of such a realistic transformation.

The Concern with the TEENAGE-FACE TikTok Filter

Now, anyone can create a TikTok filter, and users can create 2D or 3D assets to incorporate into the filter using specialized apps. There are various types of filters; some are entertaining, such as quiz filters that determine the breed of dog you are if you were one, and there are also AI-based filters that can transform your selfies into sci-fi AI-generated images.

Cosmopolitan reports that body confidence influencer Danae Mercer Ricci is among those concerned about a particular TEENAGE-FACE filter. She demonstrated in a video how realistic the filter is and how anyone can use it to photoshop teenage faces onto women's bodies. She also emphasized how dangerous this is, as it makes it easier for online predators to pose as children.

Divided Opinion

In addition, the filter's accuracy has been called into question, as some users have stated that it does not accurately portray the appearance of a teenager.

On the other hand, some users have discovered that the filter benefits them. This is especially true for users who are at ease identifying as non-binary, trans, fluid, etc. They find it therapeutic to look back through the filter and see what their true self would have looked like when they were a teenager.

Not for the first time have social media filters been a source of concern. Several advocates for body confidence have spoken out against the negative effect filters can have on their users' mental health.

In recent years, some filters have even been banned due to these concerns. Adele and Maya Jama have also voiced their deep concern regarding image-tainting filters.

As more filters become available, educating oneself and young people about online safety becomes increasingly important. Realistic filters such as TEENAGE-FACE are disingenuous and can result in risky situations.

A Look Back at Controversial TikTok Filters

In 2021, the TikTok Inverted Filter trend gained widespread popularity among users. In the worst cases, the enduring fad has caused some users to be upset because it has lowered their self-esteem.

Meanwhile, the TikTok Silhouette Challenge was believed to put its users at risk of being exposed naked.

(TW: Death) Regarding TikTok challenges, the Blackout Challenge, in which a user chokes himself until he passes out, was another dangerous trend in 2021. In April 2021, the Blackout Challenge has resulted in the untimely death of a Colorado 12-year-old boy.

Although the TEENAGE-FACE filter and some TikTok challenges may appear harmless, it is important to consider their potential repercussions carefully. In addition, we must be wary of what we find online.
