Having an x-ray vision is something that we only usually see in sci-fi movies, shows, and comic books. The reality is, this possibility can happen at any time in real life.

According to the latest report, engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a smart wearable that allows the user to see through opaque objects.

The device called X-AR is a special headset that relies on augmented reality (AR) so it can see concealed things behind a box or a wall.

MIT Researchers Create X-AR

According to 9news.com.au, a team of researchers from MIT has arrived at their creation that makes use of "x-ray vision" in locating lost or misplaced objects behind another object.

Although it's not exactly the x-ray vision we expect, the wearable relies on radio frequency identification or RFID to identify the hidden thing. The user can see it on a visual display of the device.

X-Ray Goggles Have Many Uses

The X-AR has so many purposes we can ever think of. Aside from locating lost belongings or stuff, it can help e-commerce workers quickly search and sort objects in a retail store or warehouse.

For technicians who have difficulty assembling their products, the x-ray google can be their assistive wearable to accomplish this task.

The researchers released their findings regarding this research on Monday, Feb. 27. The team will be presenting the fruits of their labor in April 2023 for the upcoming USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation.

According to the paper's senior author Fadel Adib, the team aims to build an AR system that will let the user see invisible things.

"And in doing so, it can guide you toward them and truly allow you to see the physical world in ways that were not possible before," Adib who is also working at MIT as an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, adds.

Easier Object Identification Through Digital Database

When you activate X-AR, you will see that there's a digital database of objects that you have searched on. There are a lot of options to explore on the menu and the x-ray goggles will point you to their location in a specific place like a room or basement.

For instance, if you're searching for your lost smartphone, you can initially tap the object from the database menu. Later, you will see a display that will present its location in the room. You can do this by leaving a transparent sphere mark on it, The Daily Beast reports.

According to the researchers, the X-AR has a 96% accuracy of finding an object within less than four inches of its location.

MIT researchers hope that the development of X-Ar is a good start for crafting a highly-advanced set of wearables in the future.
