This International Women's Day, and particularly today, March 8, is a celebration of these ladies and what they bring to the world, more than a partner to men or bringing the next generation to the world by being mothers.

It is surprising how people still look at genders to base others on their capabilities, despite the many achievements done by individuals that prove it is not an issue or hindrance in their tasks or responsibilities, especially in the field of science.

Women of Science: A Commemoration to their Works and Contributions

The International Day for Women and Girls in Science is set on February 16 of every year, and it gives special recognition to the ladies who thrive in this industry, particularly with their contributions in their respective fields.

However, it does not mean that we stop there in recognizing their works, as after all, they deserve this recognition and commemoration this International Women's Day.

Who could also forget the great Alice Catherine Evans who discovered the unpasteurized milk that when ingested, could lead to people being sick of its effects? Still, it was Louis Pasteur who was given the credit for his work on "pasteurization" to process milk.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell also experienced misogyny during her time, as she was the first person to discover a pulsar back in the 1970s, but the Nobel Prize was awarded to her male colleagues.

The youngest person sent to orbit was a woman, and it is with Sally Ride back in 1983 when she boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger and operated the spacecraft's robotic arm to deploy communication satellites.

Not only did women dominate different fields which men are leading, but they also proved that gender is not an issue or a hindrance in their determination to succeed.

Abolishing Misogyny and Giving Equal Opportunities

Throughout history, women were criticized for being soft or weak compared to their male counterparts and this began a long history of gender discrimination and misogyny against them, from which they did not back down.

Apart from that, they are treated negatively in the workplace where they also face harassment and advances from their male colleagues, to benefit or get what they want.

This is now the time to abolish misogyny, and this does not fall entirely to men, but also to the women who think twice about themselves and their capabilities to do their work. Their grit, talent, and perseverance in the field brought the world many useful things and advancements that would not be possible without them, if not for the women that stood up.

It is a good indication that what children depict in images of scientists, astronauts, and other related fields are women, and this represents that society is evolving. However, it is undeniable that there are still loose ends to this, as gender discrimination is present in the industry.

We here at TechTimes commemorate these women who raise the flag of their identities and genders, and deeply believe that it is not the sex which defines what a person's worth and capabilities are.
