Warp, a startup focused on improving the command-line interface, has announced a new AI-powered chat feature similar to ChatGPT to assist users in utilizing the terminal and resolving errors.

The terminal is a powerful tool for developers, but its interface can be difficult to navigate. In the past, developers had to rely on web searches and shadowing experts to master the terminal. However, with the new Warp AI chat feature, developers can seek guidance directly from the terminal.

National Academy of Sciences estimates that musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal-tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and lower back pain cost the nation $45 billion to $54 billion in compensation, lost wages, and lower productivity each year.

Warp AI's Unique Advantage

Warp says that the new tool's unique advantage is its ability to interact with terminal inputs and outputs. Developers can request help in explaining an error or suggesting a fix for a command. When Warp AI generates a response, developers can run that command without switching contexts or engaging in copy-pasting.

Additionally, developers can request AI-generated commands to accomplish tasks like connecting to a cloud instance or installing software. Warp AI will guide the user through each step of the process.

Warp AI also groups outputs and inputs into blocks, making it easier for developers to seek assistance for a specific command's output. This feature is particularly useful for troubleshooting errors. Furthermore, developers can directly feed any selected text into Warp AI for more precise guidance.

The new chat feature is a step towards simplifying and improving the developer experience. It aims to make the terminal more accessible and user-friendly, especially for those new to the command line.

"While Warp AI is a powerful integration today, we can take it much further. We believe there are opportunities for AI to help both individuals and teams at work. For example, one of the first things we plan to ship is a new AI command prediction feature using a local-first Bayesian model," Warp wrote on its website.

"AI is so well suited to the terminal. It's an extreme power tool whose limiting factor has always been that it's hard to use well. It's the perfect use case for a built-in AI assistant."

Free Preview Period

Warp AI is now available for public use as a free preview. Users can make up to 100 requests per day within the duration of this preview period.

However, the startup noted that this feature will soon be part of a paid plan but for now, they want users to experience the capabilities of Warp AI and convince them that it is worth paying for in the future.

Warp is also still in the process of tweaking and improving the integration of this AI feature during this preview period. The startup has not revealed more details about its future paid plans, such as how much would it cost and many more.
