Sony Interactive Entertainment, which owns the PlayStation gaming franchise, has applied for a patent for a feature that will allow users to transfer and use nonfungible tokens (NFTs) across different game platforms, Cointelegraph reports.

The patent, titled "NFT framework for transferring and using digital assets between game platforms," intends to integrate NFTs into gameplay by linking skins and other in-game features with the technology.

According to the patent abstract from Sony, the ownership of the NFT might be passed to other end-users, allowing them to use it across multiple simulations and platforms.

Integrating NFTs Into Gaming

The incorporation of NFTs into gaming is not a new concept in and of itself; a huge number of games already make use of the latest technology. Have a look at some of the most interesting NFT Games available here.

Sony's patent, on the other hand, has the potential to change the way in-game products and features are traded, owned, and used across various games and platforms. The patent seeks to establish a new standard for in-game items, opening up new possibilities in the gaming world.

If the technology is implemented, PlayStation 5 players will be able to experience NFT use cases through popular game titles, according to the patent's schematics. With over 112 million active members on the PlayStation Network globally as of December 2022, the new technology has a vast potential audience.

How It Works for Sony

Sony intends to reward players who complete a task in a computer game with NFTs, according to a patent recently published on patentscope.wipo.int. The NFT will work as a special key that allows players to use a digital item across several games or platforms.

Hence, if someone completes a task in a game and is meant to receive an NFT as a reward, Sony's system will provide it. They can even sell or give the NFT to someone else who can use it in other games or platforms if they like.

However, how will Sony keep track of in-game assets? A patent also demonstrates a method for displaying the history and details of a digital item associated with a computer game.

Sony's system will process NFT data and use a graphical user interface (GUI) to display key information, such as who owns it and any interesting or unique features it may have. They may utilize machine learning (ML) to simplify complex data into something people can quickly grasp.

The timeline of ownership displayed on the GUI can be interactive, which means that players can click on different parts to learn more about it. They also talk about putting additional forms of data, termed metadata, into the NFT to provide more context and information about it.

What This Means

The introduction of NFTs in gaming has created a new market for game creators as well as players. The ability to purchase, sell, and trade in-game items has created an entirely new economy, with some items fetching thousands of dollars. However, using NFTs in gaming has generated security concerns and the possibility of fraud.

Besides these reservations, Sony's patent might be a game-changer for the gaming industry. NFTs in gaming might open up new revenue streams for creators, while users could earn money by exchanging in-game assets.
