A Tesla Model S sits parked outside of a new Tesla showroom and service center in Red Hook, Brooklyn, on July 5, 2016, in New York City. The electric car company and its CEO and founder Elon Musk have come under increasing scrutiny following the crash of one of its electric cars while using the controversial autopilot service.

Numerous experts also advise people not to bring other electric car models to car washing centers.

If you love going on road trips, then you already know how annoying it is to have your car dirty all the time. If you have a gas-powered car, then there's no issue bringing it to the nearest car washing center.

However, if you own an EV, then here's why you shouldn't bring it to an automatic car wash.

One of the main reasons is their touch-enabled outer surface features. Unlike conventional cars, EVs are equipped with exterior touch-enabled functionalities.

There's a high chance they can be damaged if you clean them through the car wash, especially those with high-pressure water jets.

This is why Tesla highly recommends washing your EVs by hand to prevent any serious exterior damage.

Instead of relying on automatic car washing centers, here's what you must do when cleaning your Tesla EV.

How to Wash Tesla EVs

Tesla recently launched the advanced Car Wash Mode. This new feature allows owners to safely clean their EVs without triggering the charging port handles or other touch-enabled features.

To activate this feature, all you need to do is touch the Controls option and go to the Service tab.

Once you are there, select the Car Wash Mode. After that, follow these steps when cleaning your Tesla EV:

  1. Use a hose to wash the dirt away from your car's surface before using a brush.
  2. Use a clean cloth and lukewarm water containing mild, high-quality car shampoo.
  3. After these steps, you can now start gently washing your Tesla EV unit.
