Remembering the departed is one of the ways to commemorate a person's legacy, especially if one is a celebrity that would be remembered through their works and contributions to society, with social media still running these accounts. However, there is new scrutiny over at Twitter, as dead celebrities long before Musk's takeover have seemingly retained their blue checks.

What baffles the public more are those who received the verification despite not paying or verifying their phone numbers online, and their account's check displays it is subscribed on its Twitter Blue service.

Twitter Verification Checks for Dead Celebrities are Appearing

Twitter users are getting confused now with the verification policies of social media, as blue checkmark verifications are already appearing for dead celebrities despite not seeing the days of this change.

The world lost the Black Mamba, Kobe Bryant, in 2020, and his account remains to have a verification checkmark until now. When browsing Bryant's account and clicking his blue check, the public would see the message saying that this verified account has submitted a phone number and subscribed to Twitter Blue to get this verification.

No Payment, No Verification Is Not Strongly Followed?

As per Engadget, it is unknown who is paying for these accounts' subscription to Twitter Blue, and the short-word social media did not disclose anything regarding it.

This comes at a crucial time for Twitter as it recently cracked down on legacy verified accounts that refused to pay for the subscription, one that stems from $8 to as much as $1,000 for organizations.

Twitter Verification, Legacy Checks, and MORE

Elon Musk-ran Twitter is seeing a significant revamp of the platform now, and this is under his new operations which center mostly on the verification subscription which was also his earliest proposition after buying the company.

Now, it is not only celebrities and personalities seeing a significant change but also media outlets that refuse to pay for the subscription, like the New York Times, that are no longer given the blue checkmark.

Since then, different renowned people, artists, politicians, and more have publicly expressed their rejection of the subscription requirements for the coveted blue checkmark. The only downside to this is that their original accounts will no longer display the verification despite them previously getting it for free, with this new era of Twitter Blue.

Legacy checkmarks are also not safe for this, as it previously saw a crackdown from the company with their verified status diminishing from their accounts.

However, the latest development over at the company sees those who were not around during the time Musk shook things up for Twitter to feature blue checkmarks and remains unknown if someone paid on their behalf.
