HTC One M8 owners have been waiting to get a promised software update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The update was just released in Europe, leading many to believe a U.S. launch is imminent.

When Google officially released Android 5.0 Lollipop, HTC vowed that it would offer the update to the HTC One M8 and One M7 within 90 days and we're finally seeing progress on the promise. HTC gave European One M8 owners a sweet surprise to go along with their morning coffee.

HTC's Senior Global Online Communications Manager, Jeff Gordon tweeted, "HTC One (M8) owners in Europe, have a sweet tooth this morning? Check your software updates!" While European One M8 owners were enjoying the new features and design enhancements Android 5.0 Lollipop brings with it, U.S. One M8 owners are being deprived and are stuck on a KitKat diet for the time being.

So far there's no word on whether this Android 5.0 Lollipop European rollout is only intended for unlocked HTC One M8 smartphones or carrier-specific devices.

Now that HTC has officially released its Android 5.0 Lollipop software update for the One M8 in Europe, U.S. One M8 owners are one step closer to getting the same sweet treat. Most of the features we reported in November 2014 have made it into the final build, including HTC's Sense UI, which has been scaled back to keep Android 5.0's Material Design UI front and center.

Once we hear any new information on any Android 5.0 Lollipop software updates for the HTC One M8 and other popular smartphones and tablets, we'll report back.
