Software maker Brightly confirms that nearly three million SchoolDude customers and users are affected by the recent data breach.

For those unfamiliar with SchoolDude, it's a cloud-based platform that most schools and universities use to manage orders. Globally, over 12,000 organizations utilize this tool, and the majority of the users came from the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.

According to a report by Bleeping Computer, Brightly Software informed the SchoolDude users that the platform suffered from a cyberattack where an unauthorized actor could steal their personal data.

The software firm says that the hackers behind the incident could have taken away the customer's credentials, such as names, phone numbers, school district names, passwords, and email addresses.

In a notice by the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Brightly said that the April attack affected both the past and present customers of the platform.

Brightly has confirmed that 2,964,292 SchoolDude users were hit by the cyberattack, as per the notification. The systems were breached last April 20, according to the authorities. It was only on April 28 that they discovered the case.

Brightly Urges Users to Change Passwords

In another report by TechCrunch, Brightly urged the users to alter their existing passwords as part of the safety precaution against the hackers.

Additionally, the company also said that it reset the customer passwords to further avoid their information getting exposed by outside attackers.

If Brightly did not do that, chances are hackers can use the user passwords to carry out their future data breaches in SchoolDude. Penetrating other accounts will be much easier, especially if some users have the same passwords.
