Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has recently unveiled a new security feature designed to keep private conversations genuinely private.

As explained in a recent news release, the "Chat Lock" feature offers an extra layer of protection for users who share their devices with others.

Introducing the WhatsApp Chat Lock Feature

With Chat Lock, users can secure individual or group chats with a device password or biometric like a fingerprint. This ensures that private conversations remain protected from anyone who may have access to the device.

What's more, Chat Lock automatically hides the chat's contents in notifications, ensuring that sensitive information is not accidentally revealed.

How to Activate WhatsApp's Chat Lock

To use Chat Lock, users simply need to select the conversation they want to lock, tap on the contact or group name, and choose the lock option. WhatsApp says this feature will be handy when users need to share their phones with others.

According to a recent blog post by WhatsApp, Chat Locking is designed for individuals who share their phones with family members or friends on occasion or when someone else may be holding their phone and a confidential message arrives.

With Chat Locking, users can quickly secure their chats by tapping the name of a one-to-one or group chat and selecting the lock option.

Once a chat is locked, it remains hidden from view until the user enters their phone password or biometric authentication, adding an extra security level.

To access the locked chats, users simply need to pull down their inbox and enter their phone password or use biometric authentication. This ensures that only authorized users can view these sensitive conversations, providing added peace of mind.

Feature Now Available to the Public

The feature has been launched globally on WhatsApp and will be followed by additional options over the next few months.

Users will be able to create custom passwords for their chats, allowing them to use a unique password that's different from their phone password. Companion device locks will also be introduced, offering even more options for securing conversations.

Chat Lock is just one way WhatsApp enhances its security features. The platform is already end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that the intended recipient can only read messages.

However, Chat Lock provides an additional layer of protection for users who share their devices with others, making it an essential feature for anyone concerned about privacy and security.

WhatsApp has come under fire in the past for its data privacy policies. In January, TechCrunch reported that parent company Meta was criticized for non-compliance with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

However, WhatsApp's recently introduced feature could help alleviate some of those concerns.

The platform is one of the world's most widely used messaging apps, boasting over two billion active users.
