The famous gaming company, Valve, is not taking any AI-generated artwork for all the uploads for Steam, with its policies centering on owning all of the assets that are uploaded on the platform. Its developer shared their story on Reddit which details his journey about Valve's rejection and the message that comes along with it.

Despite the rejection, there are many AI-generated artworks present on Steam now which was either left unchecked or have evidence that they own the rights needed to make the artwork present in it.

A developer with the username potterharry97 posted his side of the story over at the now private subreddit, r/GameDev, which tells how Valve rejected their entire game because of the AI-generated artwork. While the post is now private, readers may view it partially on web archive platforms to hear more of their side of the story.

The developer admitted that a massive part of the game artwork uploaded on Steam was from AI, particularly, they made the uploads on the Stable Diffusion AI platform.

However, potterharry97 explained that this was meant to only be a placeholder for now, with 2 to 3 assets having obvious AI-generated elements to it.

A Valve moderator blocked the upload and regarded that this goes against its copyright policies, but cited an unclear legal message.

Steam's Policy: Some Games Present Are Allegedly from AI?

Valve's Steam Direct publishing guidelines clearly state that it does not accept AI-generated creations to be distributed to the public.

This alone is an issue for potterharry 97's case.

However, according to Ars Technica, there is a massive presence of AI-generated artwork with ties to games present on Steam, but it is unknown if these were made with their intellectual property and have the rights to have it generated via AI.

Valve and potterharry97 are yet to comment regarding this issue.

Valve's Steam Platform for Games

Valve is known for its massive operations with its Steam platform, and it has seen multiple upgrades for it that make gaming better and more manageable. One feature included in Steam was the "Game Notes" from Valve and it helps by adding sort-of sticky notes within the game to help gamers take valuable information for easy access.

The company is known to accept many games, from AAA-rated titles from renowned developers to indie uploads from those starting up and intending to release their developments to the public.

As much as it is open to many games, it is also notorious for its bans especially if they do not meet the standards or violate policies, like with the title Succubs VR.

Many saw the addition of new games in Steam, and some may have noticed that these have AI-generated images or artwork right off the bat, but were existing on the platform. Potterharry97's game was rejected, and his side was presented on the internet, citing how they mostly included AI work but have human-made elements to it, with Valve yet to offer a more detailed explanation.
