In a promising move amid recent issues, the official Reddit app appears to be laying the groundwork for a Contributor program that could change how Redditors are recognized and rewarded for their contributions to the online community.

Code Hints New Reddit Incentive Program

Android Authority reports that code within the latest version of Reddit's Android app, v2023.27.0, suggests that the company is exploring the possibility of allowing users to earn real money for the gold and karma their posts and comments received.

If implemented, this program could incentivize users to actively engage and contribute to the Reddit community.

Two Contributor Program Tiers

The Contributor program, as indicated by the code snippets found in the app, is expected to introduce two tiers: Contributor and Top Contributor.

While specific details are yet to be officially confirmed, it is speculated that Top Contributors will enjoy better rates and benefits within the program.

The concept behind the program is straightforward. Redditors who receive substantial gold and karma from other community members can potentially convert these virtual rewards into real-world money that can be cashed out.

This approach aligns with the strategies employed by other platforms to reward creators and encourage active participation.

However, eligibility for the program will be subject to certain requirements.

Who Is Eligible?

Users must be over 18 years old and reside in the United States. Additionally, contributions must adhere to the "Safe for Work" guidelines set by Reddit.

The code suggests that a minimum threshold of gold and karma needs to be reached for verification. To begin verification, you must have at least ten gold and 100 karma, according to the code.

It is anticipated that users will have to maintain a certain level of activity and accumulate a designated amount of gold and karma each month to remain eligible for payouts.

To ensure the authenticity and security of the program, contributors will need to provide verification information, including their email addresses, personal details, and tax and bank account information.

The verification process is expected to be facilitated through third-party services such as Persona and Stripe.

Once contributors meet the payment threshold, their Stripe account will automatically pay out funds. While the exact threshold is currently undisclosed, the code emphasizes that the exchange rate and payment thresholds are subject to change.

Newest Change to Reddit

What sets Reddit's Contributor Program apart from similar initiatives on other social media platforms is its unique approach to revenue distribution.

Unlike other platforms where creators receive a portion of ad or subscription revenue, Reddit's program appears to funnel community-purchased gold and karma back into the community itself - adding to just special flairs.

This model encourages users to support one another, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem within the Reddit community.

Please note that the information provided in this article is based on code snippets found within the Reddit app and is subject to change. As Reddit has not officially confirmed the Contributor program, specific details may vary upon its official announcement.
