Google One, the subscription service by tech giant Google, is set to release a major update to its VPN on July 29.

PhoneArena reports that this VPN by Google One update will enhance user experiences by changing the default IP address region from broad to local, offering improved privacy options and more accurate location-based services.

Google One VPN

The Google One VPN, designed to protect users from hacking and other online attacks, currently employs a broad IP address region as the default setting.

This means that when users connect to the VPN, their location is masked by placing them within their country but not necessarily in their specific local region.

While this default setting provides a certain level of privacy, it can hinder the functionality of location-based services and experiences.

What's In the Update?

The upcoming update addresses this limitation by introducing the option to set the VPN's default IP address region to a more localized setting.

By choosing the local IP address region, users can enjoy improved accuracy in location-based services, enabling widgets such as weather apps to provide precise information based on their specific location.

This change will also facilitate a more seamless user experience with apps like Google Maps and Waze, which heavily rely on accurate location data.

To cater to users who prefer the broader IP address region for enhanced privacy, 9to5Google explains that Google One will introduce a new setting that allows them to continue using the default setting.

This option will set the VPN to use a broader region, such as the user's country, instead of their local region. This alternative will provide an extra layer of privacy for those prioritizing anonymity over location-based services' benefits.

It is worth noting that changing the VPN settings from the default to a local or broader IP address region will briefly disconnect users. However, users can continue browsing securely with their preferred configuration once the settings are adjusted.

Addressing User Concerns

Google One's decision to introduce these updates comes after receiving feedback from users who encountered location inaccuracies while using the VPN.

Some users reported being placed in entirely different states instead of just a few cities away, disrupting their access to location-based experiences. By addressing this issue, Google aims to enhance user satisfaction and ensure a seamless online experience for its subscribers.
