Amazon proudly announced that over 375 million items were sold worldwide during Prime Day 2023, surpassing the 300 million items sold in the previous year.

The sales event, spanning 48 hours from Tuesday to Wednesday, witnessed a remarkable achievement as the first day alone emerged as the "single largest sales day in company history," CNBC reports.

Although exact sales figures remain undisclosed, the remarkable response from shoppers speaks volumes about the event's success.

Popular Categories and Best-Selling Items

Home goods, fashion, and beauty products took center stage during the discount extravaganza, capturing the attention of Amazon shoppers.

Among the top-selling items were Fire TV sticks, Apple AirPods, and Laneige lip balm, which experienced remarkable demand. Additionally, Adobe Analytics highlighted appliances, housekeeping products, and office supplies as popular categories.

The event featured substantial discounts on electronics, apparel, and toys, further enticing consumers to indulge in their shopping desires.

When Did Amazon Prime Day Start?

Introduced by Amazon in 2015, Prime Day aimed to attract new Prime subscribers while fostering loyalty among existing members. Additionally, the event sought to revitalize sales during the traditionally sluggish summer months.

Amazon strategically leveraged Prime Day to promote and offer discounts on their own branded devices, such as Echo smart speakers and Fire tablets, thereby boosting their presence in the market.

Amazon Did Not Hit Sales Expectations

Despite the remarkable achievements, Prime Day 2023 fell slightly short of industry expectations. Adobe Analytics had projected a year-over-year growth of 9.5%, anticipating total U.S. online sales to reach $13.1 billion during the two-day event.

However, the $12.7 billion in revenue still set a new record for Prime Day, showcasing its substantial impact on the e-commerce landscape.

Prime Day also faced competition from prominent retail giants like Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Kohl's, which hosted their concurrent discount events. Preliminary shopping data indicates that consumer spending during Prime Day outperformed expectations amidst economic uncertainties and persistent inflation concerns.

Shoppers displayed increased per-order spending, with an average order size of $54.05 compared to the previous year's $52.26, as reported by Numerator data.

Consumer Behavior and Purchase Patterns During Prime Day 2023

Numerator's survey of over 1 million households revealed that approximately 52% of respondents purchased items during Prime Day that they had been postponing until discounted.

This data reflects the strong influence of Prime Day in stimulating consumer purchases and driving sales, as shoppers eagerly seized the opportunity to acquire desired products at reduced prices.
