Apple and Google committed in May to build a specification to detect trackers from across iOS and Android platforms in a cooperative effort to fight the inappropriate use of Bluetooth location-tracking devices.

Google today announced the introduction of "Unknown Tracker Alerts" for Android devices, delivering one of the promises made at I/O 2023.

The latest feature is designed to protect users from unwanted Bluetooth tracking by alerting them when an unfamiliar tracker is discovered in the vicinity.

Unknown Tracker Alerts

The rollout of Unknown Tracker Alerts marks a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against unwanted tracking and enhances the safety and privacy of Android users.

While incredibly helpful in retrieving lost or stolen items, we have covered several instances where trackers like Apple's AirTag have been used for crimes like stalking and tracking police vehicles.

Android users with devices running Android 6.0 and above will gain access to the feature, providing them with an added layer of protection against potential surveillance.

How Unknown Tracker Alerts Work

Unknown Tracker Alerts operate by notifying users if an unidentified Bluetooth tracker is found to be traveling with them.

This can be a potential red flag, as it indicates that someone might be tracking their movements without their knowledge or consent.

When an alert is triggered, users will receive a notification on their compatible Android devices, informing them of the presence of an unknown Bluetooth tracker nearby.

Upon receiving the alert, users can tap on it to access more information about the detected tracker. The feature not only reveals details about the tracker but also displays a map showing the travel history of the tracker in question.

This information empowers users to make informed decisions about their safety and privacy.

Taking Action on Unwanted Tracking Devices

Google's Unknown Tracker Alerts inform users about potential threats and equip them to take appropriate action.

When users bring their devices near the back of the unknown tracker, some Bluetooth trackers may share additional information about their owners.

This data could include the last four digits of the owner's phone number, providing users with more context about the situation.

Additionally, the feature offers users tips on physically disabling the Bluetooth tracker. Users can prevent the tracker's owner from receiving any future location updates by taking this action, effectively blocking the unwanted tracking attempt.

Manual Scanning for Added Control

Google has included a manual scan feature for those who prefer to take proactive measures. This allows users to independently check their surroundings for trackers without waiting for an alert.

To perform a manual scan, users can navigate to Settings → Safety & emergency → Unknown tracker alerts → Scan Now. The process takes approximately 10 seconds to complete, after which a list of nearby trackers separated from their owners' devices will be displayed.
