Google Maps is rolling out a striking visual makeover that has left people wondering if the tech giant is taking a page from Apple's book.

The changes are more than just skin-deep, as Google reimagines the color palette and interface, inviting comparisons to its long-time rival, Apple Maps.

What's New?

Google Maps has long been a staple for navigation, but its appearance has remained relatively consistent. That is, until now.

As 9to5Google reports, the most noticeable alteration comes in the form of a brand-new color scheme. Out with the white roads and gray background, and in with gray roads and a white canvas, mirroring the aesthetics of Apple Maps.

But that is not all - the blues representing oceans and lakes have also undergone a vibrant makeover, adding to the visual echo of Apple's design.

Navigation Tweaks and Interface Refinements

The facelift extends to the very core of Google Maps. TechRadar notes that the navigation elements have been thoughtfully adjusted, with a darker blue route arrow now guiding the way, replacing the lighter blue one we were accustomed to.

The bottom bar has also received attention, sporting a sleeker design with smaller tabs under the map. These changes collectively provide a fresher and more streamlined user experience.

A Three-Year Cycle of Evolution

To put this visual overhaul into perspective, we need to look back at Google Maps' update history.

According to Ars Technica, the last significant visual refresh occurred in 2020, with the previous one dating back to 2017. This three-year cycle aligns perfectly with the current transformation, hinting at a potentially permanent change.

Not Everyone's Invited Yet

As eager users have noticed, not everyone has received this update at the same time. Reports suggest that Google is executing a staggered rollout, which means you might need to check your app store for an update if you haven't experienced the new look. It is a classic Google move, ensuring a controlled deployment.

Reason Behind the Color Change

The question on everyone's mind is why Google has chosen to emulate Apple's design. The answer might lie in extensive focus group research conducted by both tech giants.

While the similarities between Google Maps and Apple Maps are striking, both companies have a strategic advantage in offering familiar interfaces.

It is easier for users to switch between the two platforms when the transition feels seamless. User retention and satisfaction are paramount in a tech ecosystem where competition is fierce.

Official Word: Pending

As of now, Google has remained tight-lipped about these visual changes. No official statement has been issued regarding whether this overhaul is a test or a permanent shift in Google Maps' design philosophy.
