The Apple Store in Southampton, United Kingdom (UK), has recently joined the ranks of unionized Apple retail outlets.

Before this new move, the UK Apple Stores in London and Glasgow have been unionized. The workers asked the Cupertino firm to give them better compensation and working conditions.

After the unionization of Apple Stores in London and Glasglow, the Southampton branch follows the trend in the latest report.

Unionization among Apple's retail staff has been gaining momentum as employees increasingly view it as a means to secure better compensation and working conditions.

In Southampton, staff members argue that certain changes implemented by Apple not only affect employees negatively but also impact customers adversely.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the idea of unionizing among retail staff began to take shape in early 2022. The movement kicked off at Apple's flagship Grand Central Terminal store in New York before spreading to Atlanta and Maryland. It eventually made its way to international locations, including the United Kingdom and Australia.

Unionization Gains Traction in the UK

The first Apple stores in the UK to unionize were in Glasgow, Scotland, and London's White City store.

Now, the Southampton store has followed suit by joining the United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW) union. The employees at Apple Southampton are formally requesting recognition from Apple, aiming to improve working conditions, job security, and pay.

Apple Employees' Concerns in Southampton

The concerns voiced by staff at Apple Southampton are echoed in other stores:

  • Falling Pay: Employees have noted that their pay has not kept pace with inflation.
  • Non-transparent Pay Differences: There is a lack of transparency regarding pay disparities among staff members.
  • Inflexible Shift Arrangements: Employees face challenges with rigid shift schedules.
  • Metric-Driven Management: Some staff members find the management approach excessively focused on metrics.
  • Punitive Disciplinary Culture: Concerns arise when staff members attempt to raise issues, as they fear punitive actions.
  • Apple employees have attempted to address these issues through the company's internal processes, but their efforts have yielded limited results.

Customer Service Gets Affected Too

One specific issue highlighted by staff is the handling of repairs at the Southampton store. They claim that increased outsourcing not only jeopardizes the job security of technical experts (geniuses) but also results in subpar customer service.

A union member who works as an Apple Genius expressed their concerns, stating, "In-store repairs are increasingly outsourced to cheaper contract labor in large service centers. This negatively impacts the quality of service and adds additional time to repairs. Our technicians have always prided themselves on delivering a quality experience and prompt service, but Apple's recent practices are eroding these standards to maximize profits."

Union-Busting Methods of Apple

Apple has faced allegations of employing illegal union-busting techniques, resulting in three US rulings confirming violations of employment laws.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has upheld claims of these tactics, prompting two members of Congress to raise concerns about a recurring pattern of labor law violations by the company.

In July, Apple Insider reported that UK-based Apple stores managed to earn $1.9 billion in the post-pandemic era.
