Kawasaki has finally pulled the curtain back on its highly anticipated foray into the electric motorcycle market.

Meet the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, the electrified siblings of the iconic Ninja and Z series, designed to cater to the entry-level segment.

However, some reports raise the question: Do their specs and features match the hype? Will they revolutionize the electric motorcycle industry?

Performance and Power Surge

First things first: the heart of these machines.

The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 are tailored for the equivalent of 125cc internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes, making them accessible to a wide range of riders.

TopGear tells us that both bikes are equipped with a brushless motor rated at 6.7hp (9kW) with a compelling twist - the ability to momentarily unleash a maximum of 12hp when you need that extra burst of speed.

These bikes may not break speed records but promise a respectable top speed of around 62mph.

However, Kawasaki has thrown a curveball into the mix with an 'E-boost' feature - a thrilling boost in speed for 15 seconds.

Battery Innovation and Range

One of the standout features of the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 is their battery setup.

Twin removable batteries power these bikes, offering a combined range of up to 44 miles on a single charge.

Before you scoff at the seemingly modest range, here is the game-changer: swapping batteries. There is no need to wait around for a lengthy recharge; simply change the batteries and keep riding.

TopSpeed tells us that each battery takes approximately 3.7 hours to charge fully, and with the ability to carry spares, range anxiety becomes a thing of the past.

Kawasaki has not disclosed anything about battery capacity or range on a single charge, but Electrek reports that neither is expected to be very high.

Removable batteries limit the capacity of what can be carried; therefore, do not anticipate these to be long-distance batteries.

Meanwhile, charging options include a dedicated docking station for easy battery placement or an off-board charger unit linked via an under-seat socket.

Additionally, the advanced Li-Ion batteries come with built-in charge indicators and a symmetrical design for seamless placement within the bikes. There is even a lockable stowage area above the batteries for added practicality.

Innovative Riding Modes and Walk Mode

Kawasaki has designed these electric motorcycles for an effortless riding experience.

Both models feature riding modes, 'Road' and 'Eco,' catering to different preferences and scenarios. But the real surprise is the 'Walk Mode,' a feature rarely seen in the motorcycle world.

Need to maneuver in tight spaces or park with precision? These bikes can creep along at walking pace in both forward and reverse directions, making parking a breeze.

Styling and Design

Visually, the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 boast a familiar yet refreshed look.

The standout feature here is the striking silver colorway, adorned with black and green accents.

Kawasaki has made a statement with their electric bikes, ensuring they are easily distinguishable from their gas-powered siblings.

What's Next?

While the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 will soon hit the UK market, pricing remains a closely guarded secret.

However, the potential for these electric two-wheelers extends beyond the UK, as Kawasaki aims to tap into the growing global market for electric motorcycles.
