Meta Introduces Generative AI on Instagram

Meta is taking significant steps towards fulfilling its commitment to integrate generative AI across its product spectrum. According to Engadget, the company introduced innovative AI-based features for Instagram, focusing on image editing and sticker design.

One notable addition is the "restyle" tool, akin to a highly advanced generative AI filter. This tool empowers users to transform their current photos into diverse visual styles.

To achieve this, users can provide descriptions such as "watercolor" or more intricate prompts like "collage made from torn edges of magazines and newspapers" to articulate the specific look and ambiance they desire for their images, as elaborated by the company.

Meta also offered a sneak peek at another innovative tool named "backdrop," which leverages the power of generative AI to function as a virtual green screen.

By entering prompts such as "place me against a stunning aurora borealis backdrop," users can instantly transform their images with the desired background.

While Meta has not provided a specific release date for "restyle" and "backdrop" on Instagram, they assured users that these exciting tools would be introduced in the near future.

Additionally, the company mentioned that content generated using both "backdrop" and "restyle" tools would be clearly labeled to prevent any confusion with human-generated content.

While Meta did not provide specifics about the appearance of these labels, it is worth noting that previous instances on Instagram have featured information screens stating "image generated by Meta AI."

This transparency aims to ensure that users can easily distinguish AI-created content from human-made posts. The Verge reported that Meta unveiled a fresh set of AI-generated stickers during the Connect event.

These stickers will find their way into popular platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook Stories. Users can craft personalized stickers swiftly by employing text prompts.

Meta is planning to introduce these stickers to "select English-language users" across its apps in the coming month. These new features are part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's ongoing commitment to introduce generative AI capabilities to all Meta-owned applications.

In line with this vision, the company unveiled a lineup of over 25 generative AI chatbots, some designed to mimic the personalities of well-known celebrities and content creators. It marks a significant step in Meta's endeavor to enhance user experiences across its various platforms.

During the company's Meta Connect event on Wednesday, TechCrunch reported that Zuckerberg emphasized the significance of stickers in everyday chats. He highlighted how people send hundreds of millions of stickers daily to convey their feelings, but the options can sometimes be limited.

With the introduction of Emu, a generative AI feature, users now have the freedom to type in exactly what they want to express, allowing for a more personalized and nuanced communication experience.

"Every chat is a little bit different and you want to express subtly different emotions. But today we only have a fixed number - but with Emu now you have the ability to just type in what you want," Zuckerberg noted.
