A well-known analyst claims that Apple will implement generative AI features on the iPhone next year.

Apple is on the verge of bringing generative AI technology to its popular iPhone and iPad devices, with a tentative implementation date set for late 2024. This step towards taking advantage of the power of artificial intelligence, revealed by analyst Jeff Pu, is a significant leap for the tech giant.

Apple Rumored to Launch Generative AI Features

According to Pu's supply chain investigations, Apple is gearing up to construct a substantial number of AI servers in 2023. This will pave the way for a broader incorporation of generative AI in their ecosystem. The move is not surprising as Apple strives to stay at the forefront of technological innovation, as evident by a previous Ars Technica report.

Combination of Cloud-Based and Edge AI

Pu said that Apple's strategy involves a dual approach to AI. They will combine cloud-based AI with "edge AI," focusing on on-device data processing. The strategic mix ensures that AI capabilities are seamlessly accessible both online and offline.

Amid the anticipation surrounding generative AI, Apple maintains its commitment to customer privacy. The company is dedicated to handling personal data responsibly and securely. The rollout of generative AI features will be a deliberate process, taking into consideration the safeguarding of users' privacy.

Generative AI to Launch on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

According to MacRumors, the proposed timeline suggests that Apple could introduce generative AI features as part of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The specific applications and utilities of this technology remain a subject of speculation.

Recent reports indicate that the Cupertino firm might leverage generative AI to enhance Siri's functionality, allowing users to automate complex tasks. This move may involve deeper integration with the Shortcuts app, which could potentially make its debut in iOS 18.

Despite Apple's ambition to integrate generative AI, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo highlighted that the company might face challenges, positioning it behind some of its competitors in this domain. The late 2024 timeframe is ambitious, and it's conceivable that the technology may not mature until 2025 or beyond.

With generative AI gaining widespread attention upon the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, other companies are expected to follow the trend with this technology.

Through an AI app that can provide human-like responses to queries, Apple sees it as a new norm in the tech space. Other tech giants, such as Google and Microsoft, have also ventured into this space with their AI-driven chatbots.

Apple's Cautious Approach to AI's Issues

Apple has openly acknowledged its interest in generative AI and its commitment to a cautious approach. The company's CEO, Tim Cook, expressed awareness of potential issues related to bias and data hallucination associated with AI.

It's no wonder that the iPhone maker appears to be invested in generative AI since it is reportedly hiring a Generative AI Quality Engineer who is knowledgeable in machine learning and foundation models.

According to the company, the qualified candidate should have a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or any math, physics, or computer-related field.
