Nintendo has consistently kept gamers on their toes with groundbreaking innovations, and it is once again stirring the pot.

As first reported by GameRant, a recent patent filing discovered by some sources suggests a new dual-screen gaming device, but with a twist - it can be split in half.

While patents do not guarantee product releases, the gaming community is surely excited about what this potential creation might mean for the future of Nintendo's hardware.

Nintendo's intriguing patent hints at a splitable dual-screen gaming device, sparking excitement about potential innovations. Is the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon?

Nintendo's Interesting New Patent

The patent, which is reminiscent of the Nintendo 3DS but with a unique twist, indicates that Nintendo is continuing to push the envelope.

Instead of the familiar clamshell design, where the top screen folds down onto the bottom screen, this new device's top screen faces outward even when the device is closed. This innovation could open the door to exciting possibilities.

Notably, this dual-screen device's top and bottom halves can operate independently of each other. In a move that has Nintendo fans speculating wildly, the two halves can communicate wirelessly, allowing two gamers to play together on the same device.

This functionality is reminiscent of the DS or 3DS, where local multiplayer was a beloved feature. Additionally, there's a touchscreen on the outside of the console, enabling interactions even when it's closed.

This aspect could potentially breathe new life into classic DS games and bring them to the Nintendo Switch Online library. However, it is important to remember that not all patents translate into actual products.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Coming?

The Switch 2 has already been the subject of numerous rumors and speculations. According to sources cited by Video Games Chronicle, development kits for the Switch 2 have already been dispatched to key partners, and a release is planned for the second half of 2024.

Furthermore, the gaming community has already learned that the Nintendo Switch successor's tech demos were shown privately to developers at Gamescom in August.

Nintendo's Mysterious Development

A key takeaway from these developments is Nintendo's commitment to a smooth transition between platforms.

In the past, each new Nintendo console came with a distinct account system, complicating the shift for players. However, the introduction of the Nintendo Account system aims to facilitate seamless transitions between devices.

VGS tells us that Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser emphasized this, stating, "Our goal is to minimize the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another."

While the features of the upcoming platform remain undisclosed, it is evident that the Nintendo Account system will play a pivotal role.
