Tesla has officially announced its intention to introduce a modification package that transforms the recently launched Cybertruck into a functional boat. This revelation aligns closely with the highly anticipated Cybertruck delivery rollout.

WHY CYBERCAT

Living in the Greater Seattle Area on Puget Sound, I’ve dreamed about having a way to easily and quickly hop across the water whenever I desired, that was inexpensive, didn’t require boat parking (marina mooring) and, most importantly, was clean given my background in climate tech.

Cybertruck as a Boat?

Elon Musk has officially announced Tesla's plan to introduce a package that enables its recently launched Cybertruck to be used as an actual boat. The recent post on X stated that they will offer a mod package that allows the Cybertruck to traverse at least 100 meters of water as a boat.

A potential conceptualization for enabling aquatic capabilities draws inspiration from Cybercat, an innovation by a startup based in Seattle.

Cybercat serves as an aftermarket kit designed to transform the sleek Tesla Cybertruck into a catamaran, providing an optional hydrofoil extension. The modification harnesses the adaptive ride height of the Cybertruck and integrates the Cybercat's folding inflatable pontoons, ensuring optimal ground clearance.

As the transition to water occurs, the electric outboard motors, pontoons, and hydrofoils seamlessly fold down, accompanied by the retraction of the wheels, facilitating a swift takeoff. In environments like shallow waters or around docks, the Cybercat exhibits precise maneuverability, utilizing the wheel rotation of the Cybertruck for controlled propulsion.

Conceptualized during the previous summer, the idea for a collapsible, hydrofoiling electric water vehicle that fits in a bike locker emerged. It allows users to seamlessly transition from water travel to pedestrian mode.

Recognizing the limitations of this concept in winter weather, the Cybercat and Cybercat Foiler were born, designed for quick transformation into high-performance amphibious catamarans.

The road-legal, modular design enables a single person to transform the Cybertruck into a Cybercat or Cybercat Foiler in just 5-10 minutes, offering a swift and efficient solution for water travel enthusiasts.

Hinting Amphibious Capabilities

As early as 2020, Interesting Engineering reported that Elon Musk hinted at the prospect of the Cybertruck possessing amphibious capabilities. Responding to a 3D artist's depiction of the Cybertruck as a watercraft, Musk's initial tweet suggested feasibility, stating, 'I believe we could make that functionality possible.'

In the subsequent years, Musk playfully teased the truck's water-friendly features, confirming that the Cybertruck would be 'sufficiently waterproof to function briefly as a vessel, enabling it to traverse rivers, lakes, and even moderately calm seas.'

Last year, Musk expressed the goal of enabling a Cybertruck to navigate the water stretch between SpaceX's Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas, covering a distance of approximately 360 meters (1,100 feet).

Upon the initiation of Tesla's Cybertruck deliveries last month, it was revealed that the Cybertruck's Off-Road Mode incorporates a "Wade Mode," which pressurizes the battery pack for sealing purposes, as reported by Electrek.
