AI has entered the domain of bedtime storytelling, providing parents with a tool to create more personalized and relatable tales through customized AI chatbots. The question that arises is whether AI bedtime story tools live up to the hype.

Transforming Parenting

In the plus and enterprise subscription of ChatGPT, a feature called GPTs is introduced, enabling users to build customized AI chatbots tailored for specific purposes. For instance, gardening enthusiasts can create a GPT to respond to all gardening-related queries.

Leveraging Open AI's GPTs, Interesting Engineering reported that numerous parents and AI companies are utilizing this technology to develop personalized AI chatbots that generate bedtime stories uniquely crafted for children.

The rising popularity of GPTs and other bedtime story apps based on ChatGPT can be attributed to their ability to facilitate the creation of personalized stories by parents and children. Crafting a personalized bedtime story independently, especially after a taxing day, can prove challenging.

Yet, with the assistance of a bedtime story app, the process becomes streamlined. Simply input your kids' names, ages, the chosen characters, and the moral of the story, and within minutes, the AI will generate a customized bedtime narrative that fulfills your and your kids' expectations.

While reading stories from a book remains an option, AI introduces a unique element by allowing you to craft stories with a personalized touch. This is why children might find AI-generated bedtime stories more relatable and engaging.

Luke Warner, a developer and father utilizing a customized GPT for generating personalized bedtime stories for his daughter, shared with Wired that the AI in its story includes details like naming her school, specifying the area she lives in, and commenting on the weather. This approach enhances the story's realism and engagement.

Business Insider reported that Journalist and parent Kelly Purch expressed her experience without using direct quotations. She conveyed feeling creatively drained by day's end and preferring reading words on a page.

Despite her exhaustion, she highlighted her daughters' love for personalized stories and eagerly embraced the opportunity to test an app employing artificial intelligence for bedtime story generation.

Potential Setbacks

One significant concern associated with AI-generated content lies in the potential inclusion of inappropriate words, references, or biases, rendering a story unsuitable for children. Hence, parents must exercise caution when entering prompts to generate a story.

While OpenAI's moderation API strives to ensure content produced on its platforms is devoid of profanity and family-friendly, Linus Ekenstam, the cofounder of Bedtimestory.ai, acknowledges that it's not entirely foolproof.

Despite continuous improvements, there is still room for refinement to steer away from inappropriate inputs. There also might be a lack of well-written language, grammar, plot twists, and emotional appeal commonly found in traditional children's storybooks.

Furthermore, AI chatbots may occasionally produce repetitive and monotonous storylines. It's essential to recognize that an AI chatbot can only create a story; the responsibility of reading and potentially editing the content lies with the parent, particularly if the AI introduces errors.
