Lenovo is showing off the first laptop that might justifiably boast a completely bezel-less display, thanks to its transparent micro-LED screen that resembles a piece of clear glass when inactive.

However, when activated, this 17.3-inch Micro-LED display is capable of presenting text, images, and graphics. Currently a concept, the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept has been crafted by Lenovo, with prototypes showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Lenovo has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the laptop's hardware, revealing only that the screen delivers "high color saturation along with outstanding contrast and a brightness of 1000 nits," ensuring "superior visibility in both indoor and outdoor environments." The display's transparency allows for the overlay of virtual objects onto real-world scenes.

Moreover, Lenovo has equipped the laptop with a rear-facing camera situated at the lower back, enabling users to capture real objects for interaction via the display.

"The brilliance of this laptop lies in its intelligent integration of the virtual and real," Lenovo wrote on its website. "Through the power of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), the transparent screen opens up new avenues of work collaboration and efficiency by enabling the interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information to create unique user-generated content. The transparency allows it to effortlessly integrate naturally within its environment. Users can seamlessly switch between the keyboard and drawing board with a supported pen, unlocking new levels of creative efficiency. AI in combination with transparent displays will open up new ways of engaging with data and applications, offering opportunities to develop new features and form factors."

Lenovo highlighted that Micro-LED technology brings numerous benefits to the creation of transparent displays. The technology's high color saturation, remarkable contrast, and brightness of 1000 nits ensure the screen is clearly visible in both indoor and outdoor environments, making it versatile for a variety of settings. Additionally, Micro-LED technology holds potential for future enhancements in image quality, durability, and the ability to adjust the screen's transparency. This adjustment capability can offer increased privacy or greater transparency for interacting with real-world objects.
