Intuitive Machines' first moon mission is facing a premature end as its Odysseus spacecraft encountered a setback during landing, tipping over and altering the position of its solar panels related to the sun.

This development, revealed in an update on Tuesday morning, marks an unexpected turn for the historic endeavor. Despite the setback, flight controllers diligently assess the remaining battery life, estimated to be between 10 and 20 hours. 

The spacecraft touched down on the lunar surface five days prior and was initially projected to operate for 7 to 10 days.

Intuitive Machines' Historic Moon Landing

Intuitive Machines achieved a significant milestone with the successful landing of its Odysseus lander near the lunar south pole, marking the first American hardware to land on the moon since NASA's final Apollo mission in 1972.  

Odysseus is also the first privately developed and operated spacecraft to achieve a lunar landing, positioning itself as a pioneer in space exploration. 

However, the triumph was overshadowed by the revelation that Odysseus had tipped over during descent, as conveyed by Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus. 

Altemus suggested that the spacecraft could have descended at a lateral angle and a little too fast, which could have caused one of the feet to catch on a rock or fissure, leading to the accidental tip over uneven terrain during landing, according to TechCrunch

Latest Updates from Odysseus

Despite the unexpected turn of events, Odysseus remains operational, transmitting valuable payload science data and imagery. 

The spacecraft's imagery offers unprecedented observations of the lunar south pole region, captured at close range during its descent. These images provide valuable insights into an area of the moon that has been relatively unexplored.

Moreover, Odysseus' precise landing location, confirmed to be within 1.5 kilometers of its intended site near the lunar south pole, underscores the precision and accuracy of the mission's execution. 

The spacecraft's positioning, slightly elevated on a rock, suggests a controlled landing despite the unforeseen circumstances. As the mission progresses, flight controllers continue to monitor Odysseus' operations, focusing on the spacecraft's ability to transmit scientific data and imagery. 

While the current orientation may pose challenges, efforts are underway to maximize the spacecraft's functionality and fulfill its mission objectives.

Upcoming News Conference of Intuitive Machines With NASA

Looking ahead, Intuitive Machines is set to participate in a news conference with NASA to discuss the IM-1 Mission to the moon, a significant milestone in the company's collaboration with the space agency under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and the Artemis campaign. 

The event, scheduled for February 28, will provide further insights into the mission's achievements and future endeavors in space exploration. Participants in the news conference, which will be aired on NASA+ and NASA Television, include key stakeholders from Intuitive Machines and NASA.
