Google's Gemini AI just took another step into your workday, this time by watching your videos so you don't have to.
A new feature rolling out to Google Workspace users allows Gemini to scan and summarize videos stored in Google Drive. That includes recordings of work meetings, training sessions, and internal presentations (as long as they have captions, that is). The summaries cover key takeaways, action items, and key moments, making it easier to catch up without sitting through an entire playback. The feature is part of Gemini's growing role as a workplace assistant, integrated directly into tools like Docs, Gmail, and now Drive.
"Starting today, you can use Gemini in Drive to get summaries and ask questions about the content of videos in your Drive, such as: 'Summarize this video,' 'List action items from this meeting recording,' or 'What are the highlights from this announcement video?'" wrote Google in a blog post.
Watching videos can be a chore, especially for those of us who do better with written language. Plus, having to re-watch a video for info you missed the first time can be time-consuming, and it's also tricky to skim a video for the important bits you want to recall.
The new feature is available in English only and you need to use Google Drive's overlay previewer or a standalone file viewer in a new browser tab.
You'll need to get your Workspaces administrator to toggle smart features and personalization on for your users and make sure captions are enabled for all videos in your domain. To access the feature as a user, you'll want to double-click on a video from your Google Drive file list, then click on Ask Gemini in the top right corner.
Google says it's rolling out to Rapid Release domains starting May 28 and for Scheduled Release domains starting June 16, 2025. The Gemini-powered feature will be available only for Business Standard, Enterprise Standard (and the plus versions of each), Gemini Education or Education Premium users, and Subscribers to Google One AI Premium. Gemini Business and Enterprise customers who have already purchased these add-ons will get the feature, as well.
